Why are Grey Powder Coated Windows and Doors so popular?

Why are Grey Powder Coated Windows and Doors so popular?

On the face of it the perception of Grey is not a positive one. Grey Skies,
Grey mood.

Yet in installations today the vast number of bifolding doors and windows
installed are grey powder coated aluminium. Why is that? Who was it that
decided grey would be the colour of choice? Architects and designers or
homeowners?

Polyester Powder Coated Grey aluminium windows and doors have seen a massive
surge in recent years. Some suppliers hold grey aluminium material in stock
alongside white and other colours, such is it's popularity.

The trend started with Architects in commercial buildings and modern homes
and was very quickly adopted by the industry generally. This is a good
thing. More and more showrooms are embracing colour and lead times on
coloured products are coming down.

Grey powder coated aluminium doors and windows look set to be the core
product for a while yet.

It demonstrates that tastes are changing as are buying habits and coloured
windows and doors will continue for many years to come.

How Aluminium Doors Can be Used Inside

How Aluminium Doors Can be Used Inside

Sliders and stackers are fantastic solutions for external entrances. Their
glass panels and smooth sliding or stacking operation make a wonderful
unobstructed flow from the house to the garden. They are great to use for
entrances and exits to patios, balconies, pools and other outside
entertainment areas. But did you know that aluminium doors also make great
interior dividers? There are numerous different ways to use aluminium doors
inside, all of which open up your space, both visually and physically.

Sliders or stackers can be installed inside with either transparent or
opaque glass panels, depending on the level of privacy you require. Both
options let light spread through the building, brightening up even the
darkest spots in your house. Additionally aluminium doors are available in
over one hundred different frame colours, allowing you to find an exact
complement for your interior décor. The sliders or stackers you choose could
even become a key feature in the decoration of your house. Aluminium doors,
whether sliding or stackable, have a strikingly sleek design and give any
space a super modern touch.

Glass panelled dividers are a perfect fit in offices. If you are interested
in a more heavy-duty option than the standard office partitions, sliding or
stacking aluminium dividers can create a flexible space organisation for
your office. With their large glass panels, sliders and stackers are a
perfect solution for an open space office that still requires noise blocking
and security. To create more space in the office, stacking aluminium doors
can simply be folded back so that they effectively disappear.

The dividers are also well suited to use throughout the home, particularly
in studio apartments, where they can provide handy room divisions without
sacrificing any precious space. Both the sliders and stackers are ideal for
using between lounge areas and dining rooms, or bedrooms and en suites. To
stylishly divide your space, glass panelled doors are the perfect choice.

Are Aluminium Doors Fire Resistant?

Are Aluminium Doors Fire Resistant?

If you live in a bushfire prone area, you will want to ensure that your home
is as well protected from fire as possible. It is a well-known fact that
doors and windows mark the weakest spots of your home, where fire can easily
enter. So, is an aluminium door fire resistant?

In short, yes, an aluminium door is relative fire resistant. Like most
metals, aluminium only melts at a very high temperature, so it will be fine
under normal bushfire conditions and will stop the flames from entering your
home. There is, however, nothing to stop the heat of the fire being
transferred through the aluminium and into the room beyond, which can result
in spontaneous combustion of some materials. That is, unless your aluminium
entrances have been treated to be fire resistant.

As aluminium doors are most often chosen for their ability to hold large
expanses of glass to provide unobstructed views, it is extremely important
to make sure that your glass is double glazed safety glass. This will ensure
the best fire resistance possible in your doors.

When looking to install aluminium doors in your home, you need to first
find out what bushfire attack level (BAL) region your home is in and then
plan accordingly. This because different BAL's will require different
amounts of protection in your doors. Aluminium is, generally, suitable at
all levels as long as it has been properly treated.

During a bushfire, your doors will have two important functions - firstly,
they will form a barrier against the flames when closed, and secondly, they
provide an avenue of escape when opened. Choose the most fire resistant
aluminium doors possible for use in your home to keep your family safe.

What to Avoid when Cleaning Aluminium Doors

What to Avoid when Cleaning Aluminium Doors

In order to keep your aluminium doors looking great and retaining their
weather resistant properties, it is necessary to clean the surface regularly
with water and a mild detergent. It is important, however, that you make
sure your maintenance measures don't cause more harm than good, as many
harsh cleaning solutions can actually cause damage to your aluminium doors.

Although you will need a sponge to wash down your aluminium doors, it is
important that you don't use anything too abrasive, to avoid damaging the
metal or removing any finishes. This is especially true if you are cleaning
an alloy metal, as the aluminium may be blended with a much softer metal
that is susceptible to scratches and marks.

Metals such as these can become dull and worn looking after several years
of exposure to the sun, causing the metal to oxidise, creating a dully
milky-grey layer to accumulate on the surface of the aluminium. While this
layer can be stripped away, using harsh household cleaners may just cause
further damage to the frames.

To remove this dull and grimy layer, without using any harsh chemicals or
abrasive materials, you can make a completely natural paste by mixing
together half a cup of lemon juice and half a cup of baking soda, and
applying it to the door frames. You can let this mixture sit on the surface
for several minutes, and after wiping it off with a damp sponge, your doors
should be polished and shining as good as new.

How To Keep Aluminium Doors Maintained

How To Keep Aluminium Doors Maintained

When you have aluminium doors in your home, it is important that you keep
them well maintained, otherwise you may find them eventually experiencing
annoying problems, such as sticking and jamming. Fortunately, door
maintenance is a fairly simple process that can be completed in a few hours
on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

Step 1: Take your vacuum cleaner or a stiff bristled brush and use it to
clean out the dirt and other grit from the channels of the door. You should
also spray the channels with a silicone lubricant to prevent rust and other
types of corrosion from forming.

Step 2: Check out the spring locks of your aluminium door. If they appear
to be a little stiff, take a moisture-displacing penetrating lubricant (like
WD-40) and give the locks a good spray.

Step 3: If the aluminium frames have attracted mildew growth, mix together
a solution of a third a cup of powdered laundry detergent, two-thirds a cup
of trisodium phosphate, about a litre of bleach and about 3 litres of water.
Take a soft brush and apply this solution to the mildew affected areas,
rinsing well.

Step 4: To clean the rest of the aluminium frame, mix together a solution
of a mild detergent and water. Take a soft brush and use it to apply the
solutions to the aluminium, rinsing well with clean water.

Providing that you follow the above steps once every few months, you can go
a long way towards ensuring that your aluminium doors are maintained and
remain in good working order for many years to come. To protect your skin
from the harmful chemicals in some of the cleaners used to clean your doors,
it is recommended to wear safety goggles and gloves.

How To Prevent Condensation Damage In Your Aluminium Door

How To Prevent Condensation Damage In Your Aluminium Door

Unfortunately, the threshold of aluminium doors is known to retain moisture
and condensation, which can cause all sorts of problems (including rust
formation and mould growth). Over time, these problems can spread into the
floor surrounding the door, resulting in some costly repairs. To prevent
this sort of damage in your home, you should replace your current aluminium
threshold with a new thermal one.

Step 1: Remove the old threshold for your aluminium door by unscrewing it
(the screws are usually found underneath the weather stripping that sits on
top of the threshold).

Step 2: Carefully look over the wooden doorframe beneath to see whether any
damage has already been caused. If rust or mould is present, you will need
to call in a professional to repair this damage before continuing.

Step 3: Take some threshold tape and cut it to the correct length, adding
an extra 2 inches so that you can have 1 inch leeway either side of your
doorway. Peel off the tape's protective backing and press it into the
doorsill. Trim away the excess tape when you're happy.

Step 4: Install the new thermal threshold by screwing it into place where
the old one was. Make sure that it is angled away from your house so that
water and moisture will simply run off. To finish, apply a bead of silicone
caulk to the threshold where it meets the doorjamb.

The wooden frame beneath your aluminium door should now be protected
against the dangers that water and moisture poses. At the same time as
checking the frame for problems (step 2), you should also inspect the floor
either side of the door, especially if you find signs of damage.
