Are Aluminium Doors Fire Resistant?
If you live in a bushfire prone area, you will want to ensure that your home
is as well protected from fire as possible. It is a well-known fact that
doors and windows mark the weakest spots of your home, where fire can easily
enter. So, is an aluminium door fire resistant?
In short, yes, an aluminium door is relative fire resistant. Like most
metals, aluminium only melts at a very high temperature, so it will be fine
under normal bushfire conditions and will stop the flames from entering your
home. There is, however, nothing to stop the heat of the fire being
transferred through the aluminium and into the room beyond, which can result
in spontaneous combustion of some materials. That is, unless your aluminium
entrances have been treated to be fire resistant.
As aluminium doors are most often chosen for their ability to hold large
expanses of glass to provide unobstructed views, it is extremely important
to make sure that your glass is double glazed safety glass. This will ensure
the best fire resistance possible in your doors.
When looking to install aluminium doors in your home, you need to first
find out what bushfire attack level (BAL) region your home is in and then
plan accordingly. This because different BAL's will require different
amounts of protection in your doors. Aluminium is, generally, suitable at
all levels as long as it has been properly treated.
During a bushfire, your doors will have two important functions - firstly,
they will form a barrier against the flames when closed, and secondly, they
provide an avenue of escape when opened. Choose the most fire resistant
aluminium doors possible for use in your home to keep your family safe.
